West Negus was born in New Jersey, the son of Shaidlock and Sarah Negus. The family moved to Westland MM in 1789 and were founding members of Redstone MM (1793) and then of Providence MM (1817). West Negus married Mary Thompson in 1823. They moved to New Garden (Ohio) in 1827. The Negus family was Orthodox in 1828, but they joined the Gurneyites in 1854.
