Somerset Meeting was located in the village of Somerton, south of Barnesville, Ohio. The meeting was established in 1818 and was laid down in 1860.
The first meeting house was constructed c. 1819 south of the village of Somerton. The meeting was majority Hicksite in 1828, and they forced the Orthodox to meet elsewhere. The Orthodox constructed a meeting house c. 1829 north of the village. This building remained in use until 1860. Among the last families there was Tilman and Rachel Patterson, who moved to Iowa.
The Orthodox Meeting did not suffer a division in 1854. The meeting house was dismantled, with the pieces used in the reconstruction of the Ridge Meeting House. In the early 20th century, pigs from the adjacent farm overran the burial ground and knocked over the few markers there. The burial ground is not easily identifiable today. |
