This meeting was held in the village of St. Clairsville, Belmont County. Because Friends refused to pronounce the "Saint" portion of place names, they were challenged by what to call this meeting. Because they never came to a satisfactory conclusion, the meeting was called by three names throughout its existence: "Clairsville," "St. Clairsville," and "Sinclairsville."
At the time of the Hicksite controversy, the meeting here was laid down (Stillwater QM 8/27/1828). It was opened again on 6/10/1829 by direction of Stillwater QM on 5/27/1829, and at that time the meeting was named Sinclairsville MW.
The Belmont Chronicle included a short article on 5/13/1875 that stated that the meeting house here was torn down and built larger around 1831. At the time of the article (1875), the building was in the process of being demolished. The materials were being sold as demolition proceeded. The article stated that meeting was last held in 1870. |
