George Gilbert was a leading Elder in Ohio YM in the mid-19th century. Gilbert worshipped at Sewickley until he moved to New Garden, Ohio, in 1871.
Gilbert was among the so-called "Middleite party" that attempted to hold Ohio Friends together during the difficult 1850s and 1860s. As Men's Clerk of Ohio YM, he was more successful in placating the interest groups in Ohio YM than his predecessor, and his role in limiting the 1863 Primitive division has never been adequately appreciated.
