Horton J. Howard was a newspaper editor in St. Clairsville. Howard left Friends in 1836 to show his support of his father-in-law, Elisha Bates. HJH's wife Mary died by 1850, as in the US Census schedules for 1850 to 1880 his wife is listed as Eliza, who was born in New York State. Howard was the editor of the Belmont Chronicle and printed books and pamphlets on his newspaper press. He moved to Henry County, Iowa, in the 1860s and was serving as Recorder of Deeds in Henry County at the time of the 1870 US Census. He was living with a daughter Mary H. Hormell and her family at the time of the 1880 US Census.
HJH's DOB and DOD come from his tombstone in the Forest Home Cemetery in Mt. Pleasant, Henry County, Iowa; a photograph of it is provided at Find-A-Grave.com.
