New Garden MM (H) was one of the largest Hicksite bodies in Ohio in 1828. Many prominent Friends before the division had advocated against the construction of the Mount Pleasant YMH unsuccessfully and then became Hicksite in 1828. At the time of the division, the Hicksites retained the majority of the members, including all Friends at Grove PM. The Hicksites did not feel strong enough to sustain a MM at Sandy Spring, so Hicksites of Sandy Spring and New Lisbon MM joined New Garden MM in 1829. The MM experienced a serious decline in the 1840s, partially due to a large portion of the members leaving to join the Progressive movement. The final meeting in the MM, Grove PM, was laid down in 1851, all remaining members having become Progressive.
