History Salem Quarterly Meeting first met at Salem on 6/18/1808. Jesse Holloway was appointed Clerk for the day, with William Heald as Assistant Clerk. Heald read a minute by Baltimore YM authorizing the new QM, and Friends on the YM committee responded when their names were called.
The normal elements of a business meeting were then conducted. Reports were received and read from Middleton and Salem MMs. The MM answers to the Queries were read, and a QM summary was approved. A committee was appointed to bring names of Friends to serve the meeting as Clerk and Assistant Clerk for the coming year.
A request for the establishment of new meetings came from each MM. Salem MM forwarded a request to have a new MM established for New Garden and Sandy Spring PMs. Middleton MM forwarded a request for a PM to be established at Elk Run. The QM appointed committees to visit Friends in these areas.
Last, committees present from Redstone and Short Creek QMs asked Salem QM to appoint a committee to meet with them on the matter of establishing a new YM west of the mountains. Salem QM appointed such a committee.
When the second session of Salem QM met on 9/17/1806, the committee on clerks reported that it recommended that William Heald be appointed Clerk and Jesse Holloway Assistant Clerk (thus switching the roles of the two men). This report was adopted, and the two men switched sides of the desk so that Heald could begin his service as QM Clerk. |
