Philip Wayne Helms played an important role in the world of Christian Quakers in Michigan. Raised a Methodist, he became a Quaker after becoming a conscientious objector during the Vietnam conflict.
Phil was active among liberal Friends in Michigan during the 1980s and 1990s. He held several positions and participated in public meetings held at the site of historic Friends meetings in Michigan. During these years, Phil was active in the Tolkein Society. Uncomfortable with the lack of Christian focus in meetings, Phil began to attend Ohio YM in 1998, and he joined Stillwater Meeting around 2000. Phil opened his house in Flint, Michigan, for worship circa 2000. This meeting took the name Crossroads and was initially under the care of Stillwater MM. Phil later moved out of the house, which continues to serve as the Crossroads FMH. |
