Joseph Edgerton was a leading minister in Ohio YM in the mid-19th century.
Edgerton was born in North Carolina. When the family moved to Concord MM in 1805, his name was inadvertently left off the certificate.
Edgerton settled at Ridge, where he was recorded as a minister. He held several important posts among Friends, including serving as Clerk of the Meeting for Sufferings. He also traveled widely in the ministry.
In the early 1840s, Edgerton travelled in the ministry to New England YM. While there, he spoke with the parties involved in the disownment of John Wilbur. New England YM refused to endorse his travelling minute because Edgerton sat down with Wilbur. Not endorsing a travelling minute was a sign of displeasure at the time and was considered offensive by Ohio Friends.
