James Bowman was a son of Isaac and Anna Bowman, who were founding members of Marlborough MM. James married Elizabeth Bailey (daughter of Henry & Mary Bailey) at Cross Creek FMH on 5/25/1840.
His obituary in The Friend on 9/25/1880 reported: "An Israelite indeed in whom there is no guile, who in simplicity and godly sincerity had his conversation amongst us. An example of humility, uprightness, and integrity. He felt a lively interest in the support of the principles and testimonies of our religious Society on their ancient foundation, believing them to be in accordance with the doctrines of the Holy Scriptures. He had long manifested a concern for the guarded education of the dear youth, in whom he felt a deep interest; and for the furtherance of this good cause he left a bequest of $1,000 to Pennsville Quarterly Meeting, of which he was a member, the interest of which was to be applied to assist in the education of the children of those in limited circumstances."
