Mary Wilbur Hazard was born 1/27/1889, a birthright member of Poplar Ridge MM, Poplar Ridge, NY. Her parents were William and Rebecca Hazard; Mary's grandmother was Mary Hazard, a daughter of John Wilbur. Mary's mother died 12 days after delivering her daughter Mary, and a twin sister died a year later. Mary went to Westtown where she was a classmate of Reba Copeland of Woodland, NC. On 6/30/1910 Mary married Reba's brother, Thomas Copeland, at Poplar Ridge meetinghouse. Thomas went into the grocery business in Ithaca. NY. Their only child, Ethel, was born 5/21/1912. In the summer of 1915 they moved to Woodland to care for Thomas' parents. During this time they made frequent summer trips to central NY and on to Norwich, Ontario, to attend Canada Yearly Meeting (where Mary's maternal family had been members). In 1925 Thomas's sister, Anna, received an offer to teach school in Randolph County, and Thomas and Mary moved there so their daughter could attend a Friends' school. Thomas died in 10/1929 of hemophilia. In 1957 Mary moved to her daughter's home in Salem, Ohio. Mary died 7/29/1981, and after a memorial at Salem meetinghouse on 8/1/1981 her body was returned to NC for burial in Cedar Grove Friends burial ground.
